Join Hiking with Geeks, Dallas for a beautiful 4.25 mile hike; geek or no geek, we all have a great time getting to know each other along the way! This hike should take approximately 2 hours or so as we typically take breaks and match one another’s speed as we go.
If you haven’t been before, Dogwood Canyon is set at the mouth of a forested canyon, and is one of the few remaining places in Dallas County to observe native trees, grasses, wildflowers, butterflies, birds, insects, reptiles, etc. in a natural setting. It offers several miles of hiking trails reaching some of the highest elevations in Dallas County, allowing visitors a view of Joe Pool Lake and, on a clear day, to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and beyond. With elevation gains of over 150 feet in the first half mile, it definitely hilly but provides several spots with great vistas, waterfalls, some of the prettiest forested canyons protected from the Texas heat you can find in DFW! Audubon preserves natural habitat of over 200 acres, a portion of the surrounding 3,000+ acre greenbelt near Cedar Hill State Park and Cedar Ridge Preserve.
The event start time is the gathering time. Please plan to meet in front the visitor/education center at 9:30am. We’ll leave promptly 10 minutes after the scheduled start time (to give some cushion for late arrivers while still respecting everyone’s time). We’ll hike the trail starting no later than 9:40, depending on if we are waiting on anyone dealing with parking farther away or not, then get to know each other along the way as we hike.
Please keep in mind (on our HWG scale) that the trails at this location are rated as moderate–difficult for the DFW area because of some elevation changes being quite substantial (but nothing we can’t handle, we got this)! Also, make sure to bring enough water to drink during the hike.
For those that want to grab a bite after our hike, we’ll make plans to eat afterwards nearby.
